The Modern Languages Department offers a multiple-semester sequence of courses in the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Spanish language. Courses are also available in the fields of Hispanic literature in translation, Hispanic culture and history in film, conversational Spanish, and Spanish for individuals working in the fields of medicine, education, and law enforcement.

Span V60:  Spanish for Medical Interpreting (partially online)

Recommended for students with intermediate to advance Spanish-speaking proficiency

Introduction to Spanish/English medical interpreting. Designed to teach students to interpret in a medical context using consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation. Includes interpreting in a medical setting, pronunciation of Spanish and English names and medical terms, Spanish and English medical terminology, bi-cultural medical communication and regional dialects, scenarios that an interpreter encounters while on the job. Addresses patient/provider communication, cultural interference, interpreter code of ethics and the role of the interpreter in the healthcare setting and industry.

Span V70: Spanish for Medical Personnel (partially online)

Recommended for students with intermediate to advance Spanish-speaking proficiency

Introduction to specialized vocabulary and basic grammatical concepts needed by health profession personnel and their application in practical settings. Includes an intro to medical terminology in Spanish that includes body structure, body systems, prefixes, suffixes, word roots, false cognates and most common pitfalls due to English interference and linguistic transfer.

If you would like to enroll in Spanish V02-V03-V03S, please fill out this questionnaire and meet with an academic counselor to remove the pre-requisite.

Spanish V04 constitutes the second semester of second year college Spanish.

Course Content: This course emphasizes grammatical principles, that encompass, but are not limited to, the use of the present and past tenses, reflexive verbs, commands, object pronouns, present-perfect, present-subjunctive, future and conditional tenses, past subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive, and comparatives. Students will expand their vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, cultural skills, and overall communicative skills by performing a series of activities. These activities involve participating in group discussions, creating role-play scenarios, giving presentations, analyzing artistic and literary works, listening to lyrics, and observing short films. To further increase language fluency, students will be guided through the process of writing paragraphs, blogs, and other compositions.

Furthermore, students will be expected to expand their knowledge of Hispanic, Latin American, and Spanish cultures in relation to concepts of community, tradition, migration trends, gender roles, artistic expression, and political/religious beliefs.  

Spanish V03S: Spanish for Heritage Speakers (partially online only)

This course is ideal for students who grew up hearing and speaking Spanish, but who have had little exposure to reading and writing in their heritage language. This course will also explore the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and identity issues related to growing up bilingual/bicultural in the United States.

The  Spanish V03S Heritage Language course will be perfect for you if you want to:
