Basic Law Enforcement Academy

SUBMIT LIST

• Submit a list of the recruits who will be participating in the academy.
  • Information to include:
    • Recruit First Name
    • Recruit Last Name
    • Recruit Date of Birth
    • Agency of Hire
  • Completed list will be sent to vcadmissions@vcccd.edu

NOTIFY RECRUITS

• All recruits need to complete the steps in the section RECRUITS - Get Started at Ventura College

OUT OF STATE LETTER

• Any recruit who has moved to California within the last year will most likely be classified as a nonresident for tuition purposes. These recruits need a Police Academy Trainee Nonresident Tuition Exemption Petition filled out by the agency of hire confirming they are hired for a peace officer position in California.
  • Complete the Police Academy Trainee Nonresident Tuition Exemption Petition. It will be automatically routed to Admissions & Records for processing.
  • Only sign the form with your work email. Any forms signed with a personal email will not  be processed.

The Admissions & Records office will follow up again  after all the recruits have applied to ensure letters are on file for every recruit classified as a nonresident.

APPLY 

• Apply for admission to Ventura College
  • Fall start academy: Select Term Fall
  • Spring start academy: Select Term Spring
  • All recruits: Select the following
    • Educational Goal: Earn a Career Technical Certificate without Transfer
    • Major Category: Society & Education
    • Intended Major or Program of Study: Basic Law Academy-CERT

PORTAL

• Your acceptance email will be sent to the email you used to create your OpenCCC Account when you applied
• The acceptance email contains a link to set up the portal
• Click on the link to activate your MyVCCCD student portal after your acceptance email is received
• Sometimes the acceptance email goes to an "Important," "Other," or "Junk" folder

RESIDENCY

• Your acceptance email contains your residency determination for tuition purposes. 
• Residency determinations are based on your answers to application questions and determine the tuition rate for your classes.
• Sometimes the acceptance email goes to an "Important," "Other," or "Junk" folder
• If your residency determination is nonresident, you must have your agency complete the Police Academy Trainee Nonresident Tuition Exemption Petition. It will be automatically routed to Admissions & Records for processing.

REGISTER

• Recruits who have been approved for participation in the Basic Law Enforcement Academy will register for classes through your MyVCCCD portal under the Register/Pay tab.
• There are two courses in the Basic Law Enforcement Academy sequence, the Orientation and the Academy. You must register for both courses.
• There are two options for registration: credit or noncredit. 
  • If you take the sequence for credit the courses will show on your credit academic transcript and fees are associated with the courses. You will be eligible for a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of the courses.
  • If you take the sequence for noncredit the courses will only appear on your noncredit academic transcript. There are no Ventura College tuition and fees associated with the noncredit courses. You will be eligible for a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the courses.
• Either option will meet the agency requirement that you complete a Law Enforcement Academy. If you wish to speak to an academic counselor about your options, please contact the counselor listed at the bottom of this page.
  
   
• If you chose to register for the credit courses, register for the CRNs below in your MyVCCCD portal and finalize your payment to secure your spot.
  • Fall start academy: Register for CRNs 71686 and 73307
  • Spring start academy: Register for CRNs 32401 and 32407
• If you chose to register for the noncredit courses, register for the CRNs below in your MyVCCCD portal. Save your changes. No Ventura College tuition and fees are associated with this option.
  • Fall start academy: Register for CRNs 73670 and 73669
  • Spring start academy: Register for CRNs 32403 and 32412
• If you would like to register for classes other than Basic Law Enforcement Academy, please contact Beatriz Zizumbo at bzizumbo@vcccd.edu.

PAY FEES

• Recruits, regardless of agency association, who are completing the credit course sequence are responsible to pay the Ventura College tuition and fees associated with the courses. 
• Pay by logging into the MyVCCCD portal, clicking on the Register/Pay tab and clicking on the e-payments icon.

FINANCIAL AID

• Apply for the Ventura College Promise, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA), which could potentially get your tuition and fees paid for up to two years.
  • Noncredit Students: Do not need to apply
  • Dual Enrollment Students: Do not need to apply

• Self-Sponsored/ Non-Affiliated Students must complete additional paperwork for admission into Basic Law Enforcement Academy.
• Additional requirements are listed on the POST Basic Academy website.
